Boa Vista- In accordance of several Yanomami from Papiu as well as from other nearby villages, Venezuelan Army is crossing illegally the Brazilian border. Brazilian authorities were in the village and they saw clearly a Venezuelan helicopter landing in a bordering Yanomami village without authorization from the Brazilian Army in the beginning of 2008. Some weeks after this event, there were no traits that the Brazilian government was interested on this issue. Since last year, it is common to see Venezuelan soldiers crossing the border, asking for food and eventually threatening some Yanomami (the nature of that must be analyzed in depth). The "inefficacy" (or loss of interest due political reasons and corruption) of the Brazilian Army in removing the gold miners of the region is obviously allowing the violation of the Brazilian territory. Hutukara Yanomami Association already asked the Brazilian Government to take initiative of what is happening, but no formal/diplomatic action was taken until now. The limit between Brazil and Venezuela was established in 1750 with official topographic demarcation missions between 1755 and 1756. Differently from Guyana Essequibo, that Venezuela wants to "acquire" from the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Roraima was one of the first Amazonian lands to be incorporated by Portugal and soon after by the Federative Republic of Brazil. The Yanomami demonstrate tremendous anxiety on this situation, summing as another factor among other that make difficult their lives in the Yanomamo highlands, near the Orinoco headwaters.
News on this issue was introduced this week, when informally the Brazilian Army informed on an unofficial agreement between Brazil and Venezuela about crossing each other borders with no additional diplomatic problems. By the way, there is no official notes on this illegal circulation in the border and the Yanomami wait for clarifications of the case.
